The Key To The Next Level

This is a guest post written by my incredible wife, Courtney Foster. You can connect with her on Twitter.

On Sunday we concluded our “My Church is Kind of a Big Deal” series.

We read from Matthew 16:13-18. In verse 15, Jesus asked his disciples, “But who do you say that I am?”.

My husband said that this is the most important question you’ll ever answer.

It’s not enough to have knowledge of Jesus.Like Simon, we have to acknowledge that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16

When he told Jesus who he believed Jesus was, Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter.

After that, Jesus said to Peter, “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Matthew 16:19

Having the keys to the kingdom means having ownership.

You get keys when you show that you can be trusted.

When you give & serve at church, that’s how you show God that you can be trusted.

2 things we said last week that are extremely relevant this week also are:

1. When you show God that you are willing to think on the next level, He will give you the key to the next level.

2. A key is something small that opens something big.

Lastly, Chris shared Mark 10:45, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Therefore we are here not to be served, but to serve.

  • I loved the explanation about the keys to the kingdom. I’ve heard the keys concept, binding and loosing in the context of spiritual warfare, but not in a simpler fashion as was preached by pastor on Sunday.
    I also want to add it’s important to keep focused on using the power to glorify God in all we do when using the power he’s given us. NOT to abuse the power, like having the key to the soda machine and pulling out a pepsi when you want it, then saying God wants me to have lots of pepsi. :}
    I seek to remain committed to the kingdom, because I love the Lord and want to please him.
